SUBJECT: English      TOPIC: At the restaurant (Modal verbs)     TIME: 4 hours        GRADE: 8°

Background: Food, fruits, vegetables, locations, simple present, countable and uncountable.

Objective(s): The students will be able to create their self’s sentences and use the vocabulary learnt in real context.

Introduction: Ask them for the foods they like to eat frequently, each student have to name one different food and they have to give the recipe or how do they prepare the plate.

Material: - Videos  “at the restaurant” (2) - Role play - flash cards (foods) - Menu of a real restaurant - List of expressions

Process: I´m going to ask them if they have been in a restaurant where the waiter/waitress attends them, what kind of food do they like. If they prefer water, soft drink or juice for drinking and how do they order that in English, where they will give some possibilities. I am going to give them a list of common expressions to ordering in a restaurant followed by a video where they are going to know other expressions to ordering. After that I´m going to explain them how we can use those expressions to ordering, what is the best way to use them?Andthen give them a short explanation about the topic. Show them a video as an example of being in a restaurant, in order to familiarize the expressions, vocabulary and context. Closure: -Groups of 3 students and they will have 10 minutes to create a scene where they could use the vocabulary seen.

Notes: Ways to Improve lesson For Next Time: -To Use a different activity to reinforce the vocabulary. -To motivate the students to practice and look for more vocabulary about foods and restaurant through an extra activity.

Application/Follow-up:

We will continue with the topic “At the airport”, where we are going to study vocabulary and review the tenses seen. 

Assessment:

1. Student will be able to understand what the other is talking about.

2. Student will be able to communicate ideas by using adequate vocabulary.

3. Student will be able to mix the studied tenses for communicating ideas.

EXPERIENCES WITH TESTING, ASSESMENT AND EVALUATION

During all our lives, we are evaluated about the things we do and we do not do. When we were at the elementary school, the evaluation was one of the things we scare because if we did not have enough score, what a big problem we were going to have with our parents. The pressured to obtain the best outcomes made the students fear of the teachers and fear of the parents, sometimes.

With the pass of the time we continued being evaluated, I am talking in this case of high school, in that case the way to evaluated was a little bit different, I mean that in those ages we are more responsible, more independent and more conscious about what we are doing at school. 

When we get at the university, we know a different ways of evaluation, here the teachers focus in the way you analyzed a text, what are your arguments, how you use what you learn in context, the way you work and the tools for evaluating are very different. As conclusion many years ago my concept of evaluation had relation with fear but now I have a new concept about the word evaluation, assessment and testing.

LANGUAGE LEARNING STYLES AND STRATEGIES

Styles and strategies give potential to students’ abilities.  There are a great quantities of learning styles that could be the way our students learn. Some of those are visual. In this, the students can acquire knowledge easily. For this style images are something that we can not forget. Other is Auditory, where the student learn trough the interactions with others and representing. And finally, we have the kinesthetic and tactile style. Here the student needs to touch, to feel, to see. The personality factors involves if the students are or not introverted or extraverted, if they prefer theory or facts.

About the strategies, we need to take into account that the strategy has to be planned according to what we are going to do and think about some of our students in particular and do the activities for their correct learning. Teachers and students need to be aware about the aim we have with the use of any strategy. Each activity needs to have an clear objective, clear instruction for its correct development. So it is necessary to have cleared where we want to get and what we want to obtain from the class.

In this reading, we can find a lot of really good points for taking into account when we want to define strategies that we should use in a classroom where we have variety of personalities and learning styles. Using all these descriptions, we can make the students knowledge acquisition more effective and meaningful for them, change the routine of our class and make the students have fun.

EFFECTIVE TEACHING-LEARNING

Teachers have a very important role inside and outside the school. All students should have good bases. Principally, preschool kids need to develop a lot of abilities guided by our knowledge and our experience. For that reason as teachers we need to be effective in what we teach and in the way we do it.

Some years ago, I had an experience with my mathematics teacher when I was in 10^th grade. I could not do an exercise completely so she hit the board with her hand. That was a terrible experience that caused my rejection towards that subject for all my life.  

In case of English, Most of the students are not interesting in learning English. What is happening? It is our challenge to change the way students see the subject. Maybe, they see English like something extremely difficult and they do not understand anything but it is because teachers do not know how to teach English in a proper way, for example the way of teaching English is not the same way of teaching mathematics, at all.

I decided not to do that kind of things with my students. I prefer to use other strategies for getting better at my class and my relation with the students. We must create our new system to do a funny subject and I think to do classes more interactive where they can do more than fill an exam or guides.   

I think when we are teachers we have a great responsibility not only with the students but also with the society because through our topic we can teach much more than English.
